When I started thinking about Dani Danger, I knew one thing.
I didn’t want to create the same old afterlife.
We’ve seen Heaven. We’ve seen Hell. Clouds, pearly gates, fire, brimstone. Pick your version.
But I started wondering what it would feel like to die expecting one of those things and instead discover that the afterlife had somehow become the same corporate, bureaucratic bullshit you thought you’d left behind.
Only worse.
Imagine arriving after death. You’re confused. You’re frightened. You’re still trying to process the fairly significant fact that you’re no longer alive.
And instead of being greeted by St. Peter or escorted toward a tunnel of beautiful white light, you discover a system.
There are procedures.
There are departments.
There are people in charge.
And you need to be routed.
Immediately.
But here’s the really fucked up part.
The most important decision of your entire existence isn’t yours to make.
Someone else decides where you’re going to spend eternity.
Imagine the disappointment.
Imagine the confusion.
You spent your entire life wondering what came next, only to discover that death somehow has more bureaucracy than life.
That idea made me laugh.
And then it made me think.
What kind of person would arrive in this place and actually question it?
Not some enormous hero destined to overthrow the system. Not someone with superpowers or a grand plan.
A nineteen year old girl. That’s who.
Dani arrives frightened and confused like everyone else. But unlike everyone else, she starts asking questions.
Why are souls being routed this way?
Who decided this was how eternity should work?
And why the hell doesn’t anyone get to choose for themselves?
Dani isn’t trying to change the afterlife.
She just wants it to make sense.
Unfortunately for Dani, there are people who would very much prefer she stop asking questions.
